On the 20th of June 1967: A jury for the U.S. District Court for the
Southern District of Texas, Houston Division, returned a
verdict of guilty against Muhammad Ali on the charge of violating the
Universal Military Training and Service Act because of his
refusal to be inducted. Judge Joe Ingraham sentences
him to a term of 5 years imprisonment and a fine of $10,000.

28th April: Muhammad Ali refuses induction into US Army;
New York State revokes his license to box as do many others

8th May: Muhammad Ali Is Indicted For Draft Evasion By Federal Grand Jury

Muhammad Ali Appeals Against Sentence And Is Released On Bond

1970

On the 1st February 1970, Muhammad Ali officially retired and vacated the title.
This assured that the winner of the Joe Frazier vs. Jimmy Ellis
"unification" bout would be considered the undisputed champion.
