The Ol' Mongoose Just Keeps On Winning1949 was a good year for The Ol' Mongoose. He had thirteen bouts that year, winning twelve and losing only one. He defeated Alabama Kid twice by knockout in four and three rounds respectively. He beat Bob Satterfield by a knockout in three, Bivins by a knockout in eight, future world Light Heavyweight champion Harold Johnson by a decision, Bob Sikes by a knockout in three, and Phil Muscato by a decision. His only lost, was to Clinton Bacon by a disqualification in round six. 1950 was a vacation year for Moore. He only had two fights, winning both, including a 10 round decision in a rematch with Bert Lydell. In 1951, Moore boxed eighteen times, won sixteen, lost one and drew one. He went on tour to Argentina, fighting seven times there, winning six and drawing one. In between those seven fights, he also made trips to Montevideo, Uruguay, where he defeated Vicente Quiroz by a knockout in six. Archie Moore went on to knocked out Bivins in nine, and earned two split decisions against Harold Johnson. Archie Moore Won The World Light Heavyweight Title 1952 was one of the most important years in Moore's life. After beating Johnson, Jimmy Slade and Clinton Bacon, knocked out in four in a rematch, Archie Moore secured a date for the world title shot with World Light Heavyweight boxing champion Joey Maxim winning by a majority decision. Archie Moore is included here amongst the heavyweights because of his achievements as a boxer. He boxed for an implausible 40 years. Archie Moore became world light heavyweight champion by beating Joey Maxim by a decision in a fifteen rounder where he finally realise his dreams of becoming a world boxing champion, at the ripe old age of 39. It took a total of 16 years after establishing himself as a professional fighter. 1953 he won all nine of his bouts including a 10 round non title win against a fringe contender Nino Valdes of Cuba, and a 15 round decision over Joey Maxim in a rematch in which Moore retained the Light heavy boxing belt, went to Argentina to have two more fights before the end of that year. Archie Moore Challenged For The World Heavyweight Title1954 Archie Moore took on four more fights that saw him retaining the world light heavyweight title in a third fight with Maxim and once again the fight went the full 15 round distance. That same year Moore knocked out Harold Johnson in round 14 and he also beat Bob Baker. Archie Moore fought Nino Valdes and Carl Bobo Olson beat them both, knockout Carl Bobo Olson in the third round to retain his title in 1955. Carl Bobo Olson was then the world's Middleweight champion who had gone up in weight to challenge Archie Moore. Next, it was Moore's turn to go up in weight and challenge the bigger heavyweight champion, when he stepped into the ring with world heavyweight champion Rocky Marciano. Moore was within seconds of becoming world heavyweight champion by dropping Marciano in round two, but Marciano rallied and recovered to knocked out Archie Moore in round nine Rocky Marciano was still champion. Moore fought and beaten heavyweights but unlucky in championships bouts. Floyd Patterson Made History Winning The World Heavyweight Title1956, Archie Moore returned to the Light Heavyweight division, and won a total of 13 fights in a row including a 15 round decision to retain the world's light heavyweight crown against Yolanda Pompey in London, England, before once again going up in weigh to challenge for the world heavyweight crown left vacant by Rocky Marciano but once again Archie Moore lost in his quest to become the world heavy weight champion. Floyd Patterson won the fight by a knockout in round five. That night Floyd Patterson made history by becoming the youngest world heavyweight champion in history, record which he would hold until 1986. Patterson was aged of 20 when he knocked out Archie Moore to become world heavyweight champion. Floyd Patterson also became the first ever heavyweight boxer to regain the World Heavyweight Boxing title in April 1960. |
