The boxing heavyweight division was lit up by several great heavyweight boxers with Muhammad Ali as the leading light. Then came the 1980s. What an era of boxing that was amongst the lighter weights. Just as in the 60s through to the 70s when the heavyweights stole the show. The 80's glowed with great fighting in the lighter divisions of the boxing arena. It must be remember that, some of the most memorable bouts of the 80s were from "Iron Fists" Robert Duran, Sugar Ray Leonard, Hit Man Hearns and "Marvellous Marvin Hagler all world champions. 62 of Marvellous Marvin's career wins were by knockouts. Those were the magical golden era of high class world championship fights!

The 80's saw some real classic boxing from the lower weight in the middleweight and welterweight  division. Muhammad Ali brought the world heavyweight boxing championship fights to its highest peak which no world heavyweight boxing champion has yet achieved. His ring talents and achievements will be remembered when others will have been forgotten.  He defeated undefeated boxers such as George Foreman, Billy Daniels, Sonny Banks and Rudi Lubbers. His epic first round knockout of the German Max Schmeling made him a United States of America national champion hero. Next we have the rugged boxing world heavyweight champion who retired undefeated heavyweight champion and is still the only boxer ever to retire undefeated in the history of boxing; The Slugger Rocky Marciano who fought both Joe Louis and the the former world light heavyweight legend of the ring: Archie Moore. ....

Just when Muhammad Ali was reaching his peak in boxing he was forced to take a 3 years lay off form his livelihood of boxing. What would it be like if Muhammad Ali had he been allowed fight for those 3 years? Muhammad Ali would have had an even greater Boxing Career as there wouldn't be any fighter alive to beat Muhammad Ali. Many has compared Joe Louis' a 4 years lay off from boxing, to Muhammad Ali's 3 forced non-activity out of the boxing ring, but there can be no comparison. Joe Louis was active performing exhibitions for those 4 years away from competition matches and therefore he did not lose his timing, where as, Muhammad Ali was not allowed to do any exhibition matches. Those 3 years robbed Muhammad Ali of his timing. Had Muhammad Ali not lost his timing, he would have made mince meat of Joe Frazier in their clash in the match of 1971 billed as "The Fight of the Century."

Archie Moore though he wasn't an heavyweight champion, pit his wits against heavyweights boxers such as Ezzard Charles, Jersey Joe Walcott, Rocky Marciano Floyd Patterson and Muhammad Ali. Archie Moore fought for an incredible 27 years and knocked out more opponents than any other fighter in the history of boxing.
